WAYRA: Building Bridges Between Tourism, Volunteering, and Communities in Ecuador

An initiative by Ecomontes Tour to connect people, share knowledge, and create opportunities for collaboration within communities across Ecuador.

When Travel Becomes an Opportunity to Make a Difference

Ecuador is a country of extraordinary natural and cultural diversity. However, beyond its breathtaking landscapes, mountains, and Amazon rainforests, there are communities with needs and realities that often remain unseen by those who visit the country.

Through our experience in tourism, at Ecomontes Tour, we have had the opportunity to connect with different communities, learn about their ways of life, and understand the importance of creating initiatives that go beyond traditional tourism experiences.

These experiences inspired an idea: to use the connections created through tourism to promote community support projects, volunteering, and cultural exchange. This is how our vision for **WAYRA** began — an initiative that seeks to bring together universities, students, volunteers, organizations, and national and international travelers to contribute, in their own ways, to the well-being of communities across Ecuador

WAYRA: An Initiative with a Purpose

Our vision is to promote volunteer initiatives that connect the needs of communities with people and institutions willing to contribute and make a difference.

One of our goals is to establish partnerships with universities, particularly those offering health-related programs, to organize medical brigades and community support activities. These experiences can also provide students with valuable learning opportunities, exposure to different social realities, and the chance to develop greater empathy and a deeper sense of social responsibility.

We believe that knowledge becomes especially meaningful when it is shared responsibly and put at the service of others.

WAYRA aims to grow progressively, strengthen its partnerships, and become a platform for collaboration between Ecuador and the rest of the world, always respecting the priorities, culture, and decisions of each participating community.

A Medical Outreach in the Heart of Cuyabeno

As part of this initiative, a medical outreach campaign was carried out in the Puente Cuyabeno area of the Ecuadorian Amazon, in collaboration with the WAYRA project and its volunteers.

During this initiative, support was provided to people from nearby communities through medical care activities, along with the distribution of medicines and donations for both adults and children.

The initiative was born out of concern for the needs of these communities and a shared desire to find meaningful ways to make a difference. To make it possible, volunteers involved in the WAYRA project participated, with support from Cuyabeno River Lodge, which provided accommodation for the participants.

Beyond the outreach itself, this experience represents another step toward our goal of building partnerships that bring resources, knowledge, and support to communities across the Amazon.

It also reminds us that behind every initiative are people willing to dedicate their time and effort to contributing to a common cause.

A Previous Experience with the Huaorani Community

Our commitment to connecting tourism with community support is also reflected in previous experiences with the Huaorani community, involving groups from Spain.

These encounters allowed visitors to gain firsthand insight into aspects of the community’s daily life, share experiences, and learn about its customs and traditions. At the same time, collaborative and support activities were encouraged, demonstrating how cultural exchange can create opportunities to build closer, more meaningful relationships.

This experience taught us an important lesson: traveling does not have to be limited to observing a place. It can also be an opportunity to listen, learn, and share, always respecting the identity, culture, and autonomy of the communities involved.

It is precisely this connection between cultural exchange and collaboration that we hope to continue developing through WAYRA.

Responsible Tourism as a Bridge for Collaboration

At Ecomontes Tour, we believe tourism can play an important role in connecting people, institutions, and communities.

Our vision is to create opportunities for travelers to discover Ecuador from a more human perspective while fostering spaces for collaboration that address needs identified together with the communities themselves.

This means working respectfully, listening to the people involved, and ensuring that every initiative has a clear purpose. Communities are not simply destinations to visit; they are the protagonists of their own stories, the holders of valuable knowledge, and essential participants in any project developed within their territories.

For this reason, we aim to promote experiences in which cultural exchange, learning, and community support take place responsibly and in ways that benefit everyone involved.

We believe that every collaboration can open up new opportunities to help, learn, and work together toward a future with greater possibilities for the communities across our country, connecting people, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for communities throughout Ecuador.

Are you part of a university, organization, or volunteer group interested in joining this initiative? We invite you to connect with us and become part of a project that aims to grow, reach more communities, and turn solidarity into meaningful action.
